Open house at secondary schools(转载)
THROUGH attending a secondary school open house as a parent, you are able to personally gather information about the school so that you can make an informed decision about the desired secondary school for your child.
Such information can include what the school offers beyond the academic programmes, like the teacher-student relationships, staff support, student behaviour and mannerism, etc in your continuing effort to determine if the school and its environment is a suitable one that can nurture your child's growth for the next few years of secondary school life.
All this information would augment previous efforts of sourcing for data via the school website and other third parties.
Inspiration and motivation for the primary school child
Besides it being an opportunity for your primary six child to get to know the various kinds of experience that await him or her as a secondary school student, an experience unlike that in a primary school, it may also have the effect of inspiring the child to work towards the goal of getting into a desired school.
One parent suggests going to an open house with the child and a few of his or her close friends, with the intention of potentially motivating each other to get into their school of choice.
A typical open house
The programme can vary from school to school with regards to activities and programmes. To have an idea of how extensive an open house can be, just consider the recently held 2009 event at Hwa Chong Institution on 16 May. The programme involved the following activities for children and parents, exciting them about learning at Hwa Chong besides appreciating the physical school environment:
- participation in science experiments
- mathematics games challenges
- art gallery walkabouts
- talks, symposiums and info-hub for parents
- exhibitions on the available academic and other programmes
- tours of the CCA, sports and other campus facilities.
