First Batch of Raffles Diploma Graduates Paves the Way with New Records
A total of 1248 students at RI sat for the 2011 GCE 'A' Level Examinations - the largest of RI's 'A' Level cohorts. This is the third cohort to go through the entire six-year Raffles Programme (RP), the through-train programme offered by RI and Raffles Girls' School. It is also the fifth cohort of students offering the revised 'A' Level curriculum introduced in 2006. Out of this cohort, 75% were from the Raffles Schools, while 25% joined RI through the Joint Admissions Exercise.
Alongside the 'A' Level examinations, this is the first group of Rafflesians to receive the Raffles Diploma (RD), a certification that runs parallel to the Singapore-Cambridge 'A' Level certification.
New Records Set by the Class of 2011
The Class of 2011 set a brand new record for the 2011 'A' Level Examinations. Half of the cohort scored a distinction in all 4 H2 subjects, the highest since the first cohort who offered the revised A-Level curriculum in 2007. 622 students (50%) scored 4 distinctions in the content-based subjects, and 853 students (68%) scored 3 distinctions in the content-based subjects.
Another record set was the number of students with a distinction in all subjects offered, with 155 students (12%) achieving this phenomenal feat. In 2010, this number was 11%.
For Chemistry and Economics, the Class of 2011 also topped all previous cohorts, with 77% scoring a distinction in Chemistry and 71% scoring a distinction in Economics.
In addition, 28% achieved perfect University Admission Points of 90, which was higher than year before. The University Admission Score is computed based on a maximum score of 90 points, and takes into account General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry, Project Work, 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subjects.

Noteworthy Achievements
The RD is awarded on a tiered basis - Raffles Diploma, Raffles Diploma with Merit and Raffles Diploma with Distinction. Upon meeting the base criteria across all five developmental domains, Rafflesians are awarded the RD, with exceptional students obtaining a merit or distinction in a particular domain. For the class of 2011, the first to receive the RD, approximately 20% received the RD with Distinction, 50% received the RD with Merit, and 25% received the RD.
Even before the release of the 'A' Level Examinations results, more than 40 students have received provisional scholarships from the various scholarship agencies, such as the PSC, GIC and EDB.
RI continues to be the gateway to Oxbridge and the Ivy League colleges - 30 students have already been offered places at Oxford University and 39 at Cambridge University. 51 students have already been offered places at top US universities, e.g. Yale, Pennsylvania, under the Early Decision scheme. This is the highest number of students being offered places at overseas universities prior to the release of the 'A' Level Examination results.
The Class of 2011 also led the way in the International Olympiads:
4 gold awards for the International Physics Olympiad Li Kewei
Lin Jiahuang
Lin Sen
Kang Zi Yang
1 gold award for the International Biology Olympiad Jin Chentian
3 silver awards for the International Chemistry Olympiad. Chew Hong En
Guo Xiuzhen
Lim Yuan Zhi Martin
All of these students scored a distinction in all of their subjects.
This outstanding showing at the 2011 A-level Examinations, together with the parallel RD certification, reflects the holistic Raffles experience which brings out the very best in all our students. With this, RI continues its tradition of nurturing thinkers, leaders and pioneers who will give back to the community and make an impact on the nation.
