SINGAPORE - Junior college (JC) students who are unable to afford tuition but are motivated to do well can now get help online, for free.
Two scholarship holders - Mr Qiu Linan, 22, and Mr Zhang Yitao, 21, set up a website in June that offers broadcasts lectures to junior college (JC) students.
The Singapore citizens, who were originally from China, founded openlectures.sg, on the belief that quality education should be free.
Mr Qiu is working full time on the website while waiting to start his studies at Columbia University in New York in August, while Mr Zhang is a second-year economics major at Stanford University, reported The Straits Times.
The seven-month-old website now has about 60 JC students past and present who give lectures on economics and chemistry. Lectures in physics, biology, mathematics and geography will be added later.
They have been doing this for free and pay "was a non-issue", said Mr Qiu, which surprised the pair when they first started the site.
Each lesson lasts between one and 15 minutes, with the lecturer standing before a whiteboard, giving out bite-sized pieces of information.
About 100 lectures have been uploaded so far, with new ones added about twice a week.
Mr Qiu and Mr Zhang started the site to share their knowledge for free, when they wondered how students who could not afford tuition could keep up with their wealthier peers.
What started as a two-man outfit concentrating solely on economics lessons soon expanded.
The filming venue is provided by the Economic Development Board (EDB), and the team also uses a classroom in the Pasir Ris Elias Community Club at times.
The site is proving to be popular, with the website and its Facebook and Twitter pages getting 500 to 1,000 hits daily, reported The Straits Times.
