Section C: Comprehension Component
Read the passage below and answer questions 29 to 33.

The amount of moisture, or water, there is in the air has a great effect on the weather. For example, if there is lot of water, the chances are that it will rain. On the Other hand, if the air is dry, it should be fine. The amount of moisture in the air is called humidity. Water is usually found in the air as gas, called water vapour. The water vapour gets into the air mainly from oceans, lakes and rivers. It is produced when heat from the sun warms up surface water mad makes it evaporate, or turn into gas. The water vapour rises into air. The air is cooler higher up and the vapour cools so much that it condenses, or changes back into tiny droplets of liquid water. The droplets gather together to form clouds. Often, they grow bigger and bigger until they become heavy enough to fall from the clouds as rain. This movement of water from the ground to the air and back again goes on all the time and is called the water cycle.

Section C: Comprehension Component
Read the passage below and answer the questions 21 to 25.

The origins of the Olympic Games are shrouded in myth and legend. The Greeks dated events from the first Olympiad in 776 BC, two decades before the legendary founding of Rome.

The Ancient Greeks held the Olympic every 4 years. This 4-year period was known as an Olympiad and was used as a reference point for dating events throughout Greece. The Greek city-states had their own calendars, so the Olympiad provided a measure of uniformity. Olympia, a district of Elis, in Southern Greece, gave its name to the Olympic games.

The Olympics was a religious event for the Greeks. The temple on the site of Olympia, which was dedicated to Zeus, housed a gold and ivory statue of the king of the gods. Created by the greatest sculptor, Pheidias, it stood 42-feet high and was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World.

The Olympic games were basically just for men. Matrons were forbidden to attend the Games;however, the presence of the priestess of Demeter was required.

An Olympic victor was crowned with an olive wreath and had his name inscribed in the official Olympic records. Some Olympic victors were fed for the rest of their lives by their city-states although they were never paid. They were considered heroes who conferred honour upon their city-states.

It was sacrilege to commit a crime, including payment, corruption and invasion during the Olympic Games. According to Emeritus Classics Professor Mattrew Wiencke, when a cheating competitior was caught, he was disqualified. In addition, the cheating athlete, his trainer, and possibly his city-state were fined heavily.

The ancient Olympic sporting events were Boxing, Discus, Equestrian Events, Javelin, Jumping, Pankration, Penthathlon, Running and Wrestling. Potential paticipants included all free Greek men, except certain felons and barbarians during the Classical Period. By the Hellenistic Period, professional athletes competed. Married women were not allowed to enter the stadium during the games and might be killed if they tried. A priestess of Demeter was present, however. There may have been a separate race for women at Olympia.

For each question from 21 to 27, four options are given. One of them is the correct answer. (7 marks)

(4) The origins of the Olympic Games are shrouded in myth and legend and there was a need to have a common reference point at that time.

23. How do you know that it was an honour for an Olympic victor to be crowned with an olive wreath?
(1) The Olympic victor would be considered a hero with his name inscribed in the official Olympic records.

Read the passage below and answer questions 28 to 35.

At one time people did not think too badly of homeless wanderers, believing that they led carefree lives. Home might be a park bench or an empty carriage on a train heading for some unknown place. It was felt that they choose the life they wanted. Hence it was easy to ignore them.

Today, however, homeless people are not easy to ignore. Home can be just about anywhere -- abandoned buildings, shelters, bus and railway stations, subways and city streets. They are everywhere -- in large and small cities all over the world. Authorities over the world can barely cope with the sheer numbers of people living on the streets. This situation is worse in large cities.

It is impossible to find out the exact number of homeless people. Although there are people who have been living on the streets for years, there are some who are temporarily wthout a home because of a fire or a hurricance. Sometimes, people are forced out of their homes because they cannot pay the rent.

How do people get into such a pathetic state? Many of the homeless have lost their jobs or have problems with drugs and alcohol. As a result, they are too poor to afford housing. Some are mentally ill, discharged from hospitals with nowhere to goas their families have rejected them. There are yet others who moved onto the streets. For them, the streets are havens compared to the derelict conditions of their homes.

There have been many suggestions about how to tackle this social problem. While governments can put more money into building low-cost housing, private organisations should also do their part. They can help to provide homes for the needly and people with social problems, and job training to help the jobless to acquire new skills and ind work. Only when the government and private organisations work together can the problem of homelessness be tackled successfully.
