Is Grace really Unmerited Favour?

Is Grace “Unmerited Favour”? In our days grace is always presented to people as unmerited favour. Is it really what is revealed about grace in the Bible? Or is that portrayal of a Dangerous misrepresentation. Since we are save by Grace we better learn the truth, here are the facts:

1) Noah was the first person in the Bible to get grace. We read of this in Genesis 6:8 “But Noah found FAVOUR in the eyes of the LORD”. We must learn why Noah found favour in the eyes of the LORD? Now we must ask “WHY” did he found favour in GOD’s eyes. The next verse tells us why. It says “This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and【 he walked with GOD】” (Gen. 6:9). In other words Noah found favour or grace in GOD’s eyes because he was a righteous man, who was blameless and walked with GOD. In John 14:23 JESUS said “Anyone who loves ME will obey MY teaching. MY FATHER will love them, and WE will come to them and make OUR home with them”. When JESUS and GOD the FATHER makes their home with you, you can be sure【 you are truly walking with GOD】. That’s the reason why Noah found favour or grace in eyes of the LORD. And the other back then did not.

2) The same can be said about Lot, the second person the Bible to find grace in GOD’s eyes. In Gen. 19:19 Lot said “Your servant has found favour in YOUR eyes, and YOU have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life . . .”. The Bible shows that Lot was also a righteous person unlike the others living in Sodom. In fact Lot at his time being righteous with his words. And if GOD rescued Lot, a RIGHTEOUS man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men, (2 Pet 2:7 But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people around him.8 Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day). Hence, just like with Noah, Lot found favour or grace with GOD because he was a righteous person.

3) In Psalm 84:11 we read “For the LORD GOD is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows FOVOUR and HONOUR; no good thing does HE withhold from those whose walk is blameless”. According to that verse the good things GOD will give includes grace or favour and such comes to the ones whose walk is blameless.

4) Peter wrote about grace and clearly stated it is NOT unmerited favour by declaring this truth found in 1 Pet 5: 5. “And all of you dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for GOD opposes the proud but【 gives GRACE to the HUMBLE”】. Again the truth is GOD give grace to the HUMBLE but not the proud. If grace was unmerited favour, even the proud would get it, but they don’t. GOD opposes the proud.

5) Christians gain access into GRACE by their faith. Rom 5:2 says “We have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand”.

6) The sixth fact about Biblical grace is a true Christian can fall from grace to the point where CHRIST is of no benefit at all. Gal 5:2-4 says “2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with GOD, then CHRIST will be of no benefit to you.3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favour with GOD by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole Law of Moses.4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with GOD by keeping the law, you have been cut off from CHRIST! You have fallen away from GOD’s grace”. In review we have seen where grace were given specifically to Noah and Lot because they were righteous which is a typical way GOD grants favour and grace was also given to the humble and withheld from the proud. We also enter grace by faith but afterward, we can fall from grace to the point where CHRIST is of no value at all. Grace therefor is clearly not unmerited favour which is granted to every person including the drunkard, the adulterer, the thief, liars, homosexual etc. To get saving grace you must humble yourself and turn away from idols you have in your live to serve the true and living GOD. Don’t be deceived by false preachers and blind guides or any form of eternal security (ones save always save) preaching. It is possible for the Christians to fall from grace and lose his/her salvation.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

To inherit the Kingdom of GOD we must remain faithful and obedient to the WORD of JESUS up to the point of death.

Clothe yourselves with the LORD JESUS CHRIST

Romans 13:14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the LORD JESUS CHRIST, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Is there something in your life that you would like to put a stop to today? Maybe it's a certain behaviour, addiction, or bad attitude that isn't pleasing to GOD? Just as Adam and Eve were exposed in their sin and needed to be clothed in the Garden, we need to clothe ourselves to protect us from sin. When you "clothe yourself" with the LORD JESUS CHRIST, you will be strong against temptation.

How do you clothe yourself with JESUS CHRIST?

In the same way you cover yourself in the natural with clothing. When you receive JESUS as your LORD and SAVIOUR, and in faith obey HIS commands then you are covered and cleansed by HIS blood. You are restored and renewed. Then, cover your mind with the WORD of GOD. Cover your ears by listening to the WORD. Cover your eyes by watching only what is pleasing to the LORD. Cover your mouth by speaking the WORD and encouraging those around you and love your neighbour as yourself. Small children need help to dress up, so do we as spiritual children, therefore you need to believe in JESUS CHRIST, make every attempt to follow HIM and surrender to the SPIRIT of CHRIST. It is the SPIRIT of CHRIST - the HOLY SPIRIT, who will help you be clothed with JESUS CHRIST. As you cover yourself with CHRIST, you will be strong against temptation, and you will walk in the victory the LORD has planned for you!

Philippians 3:10 I want to know CHRIST—yes, to know the power of HIS resurrection and participation in HIS sufferings, becoming like HIM in HIS death,

Communion with GOD

Philippians 3: 7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of CHRIST. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing CHRIST JESUS my LORD, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain CHRIST 9 and be found in HIM, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in CHRIST—the righteousness that comes from GOD on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know CHRIST—yes, to know the power of HIS resurrection and participation in HIS sufferings, becoming like HIM in HIS death,

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

GOD created men and women to be in a relationship with HIM. The type of communion Adam and Eve first enjoyed with HIM was meant for us as well. Then sin entered the world and everything changed. GOD’s intended intimate relationship with mankind was broken, and it has been passed down through the generations in that damaged condition.

But, as we know, that’s not the end of the story. GOD sent HIS SON JESUS to die in our place so our sins might be forgiven and our relationship with HIM restored. Through faith in CHRIST, we are adopted into GOD’s family and belong to HIM forever—just as HE originally meant for it to be. HE has provided us with everything we need to experience intimacy with HIM.

So what happens if, following salvation, new believers never go deeper? Some may drift away from their initial zeal for the LORD, failing to make Bible reading or small group gatherings on a regular occurrence. Perhaps others try to focus on the LORD but allow earthly matters to distract them. Over time, some Christians settle for what’s comfortable and familiar. Sadly, they will miss out on the deep contentment GOD wanted to provide. Yet those who make JESUS the priority of their life will have a deepening relationship that transcends any earthly one.

Communion with GOD made King David “fully satisfied as with the richest of foods” (Ps. 63: 5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.). Paul viewed his accomplishments as nothing in comparison with “the surpassing value of knowing CHRIST JESUS” (Phil 3:8). Draw near to your FATHER, and experience the blessings of knowing HIM.

Step Out of the Boat

Matthew 14: 28 “LORD, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” HE said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward JESUS.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It's easy to be so afraid of making a mistake that you never get around to stepping out on faith. You can spend all your time wondering, "Is this faith? Or is it presumption? What if I exercise my faith for something and find out later I've missed GOD's will?"

Don't worry. GOD can handle any mistake you can make. I know because I've made plenty of them. When I did, I'd just go to the LORD and HE'd tell me, "Stay on the WORD, son. Together we'll overcome this thing." And we always did.

If you act on the WORD out of the sincerity and faith of your heart and you steadfastly stay with the WORD, JESUS will never let you down...no matter how many dumb mistakes you make. HE proved that the night Peter jumped out of the boat in the middle of the lake.

Have you ever stopped to think about that incident? Peter hadn't been praying or seeking GOD's will before he did that (got down out of the boat and walked on the water). On impulse he just blurted out, "LORD, if it's YOU tell me to come to YOU on the water."

What was JESUS supposed to say? HE couldn't very well say, "It's not ME." I suppose HE could have said, "Wait a minute now. You don't have the faith to get out here. You'd better stay in that boat or you're going to drown for sure."

But HE didn't say that to Peter--and HE won't say it to you. If you want to get out and walk by faith, HE will get out there with you and pick you up when you start sinking. HE will walk you back to the boat if HE has to.

It's better to risk being presumptuous than to waste your life in the boat of unbelief! If you have to, just dive into the water and say, "GOD, help me!"

Don't let fear keep you from taking that step of faith. Come on, get out of the boat today!

Scripture Study:  Matthew 14:22-33

JESUS Walks on the Water

22 Immediately JESUS made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of HIM to the other side, while HE dismissed the crowd. 23 After HE had dismissed them, HE went up on a mountainside by HIMSELF to pray. Later that night, HE was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn JESUS went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw HIM walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But JESUS immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “LORD, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” HE said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward JESUS. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “LORD, save me!” 31 Immediately JESUS reached out HIS hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” HE said “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped HIM, saying, “Truly YOU are the SON of GOD.”

GOD will Be Listening

1 John 5:14-15

14 This is the confidence we have in approaching GOD: that if we ask anything according to HIS will, HE hears us. 15 And if we know that HE hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of HIM.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Have you ever been in prayer and suddenly had the disturbing sensation that GOD simply isn't listening?

It's happened to all of us. We limp along praying the same old prayers, half-hoping those prayers are heard and half-suspecting they're not.

Today I want to show you how to resolve that dilemma once and for all. But let me warn you, I'm not going to slap you on the back and assure you GOD will listen to any old doubtful, self-centred thing you say to HIM. HE won't. HE's only promised to listen to prayers that are prayed according to HIS will. The Apostle John says when you pray like that, you'll know that you have the petitions you desire of HIM.

The word petition is defined as "a formal written request addressed to a sovereign superior of a particular right or grace," and that's exactly what you need when you're praying about something serious.

How do you put together a solid petition, one that's in line with the will of GOD?

First, you have to roll up your sleeves and dig into the written Word. Find scriptures that apply to your situation and make those the foundation for your petition.

Then get on your knees and consult with the HOLY SPIRIT. Let HIM help you develop your petition in detail. The best way to do that is to spend time praying to GOD whole heartedly and sincerely. Expect GOD to reveal things from HIS heart to yours. HE wants you to know HIS will. So, while you're praying, listen!

Last of all, write it down. Make a formal written request by writing down every scripture you found. Also, as you're listening to the HOLY SPIRIT for the details, write down the impressions and ideas HE gives you.

Take your time. Let the HOLY SPIRIT develop your prayer. Let the truth HE reveals to you settle in and begin to work in you. Get your petition firmly in mind, then when you're ready, present it to GOD.

Believe me, HE will be listening.
