MGS, ACS (I) to increase fees
Foo Jie Ying | The New Paper | Fri Sep 14 2012
SINGAPORE - School fees at two leading Independent Schools will go up from next year.
Students at Methodist Girls' School (MGS) will have to pay a total of $335 a month from next year. Parents now pay about $295, said Ms Anita Fam, who has a daughter in the school.
For those in the Integrated Programme (IP), it will cost $355. And it will cost non-citizens more.
Parents were told of the fee hike through an e-mail yesterday. The increases are to kick in next year, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), an all-boys Methodist institution, will also be increasing its fees.
A Singaporean student in the Express stream there now pays $280 a month.
The monthly school fee will be $325 from next year.
For a Singaporean IP student from Year 1 to Year 4 at ACS (I), it now costs $300. Next year, the fees will be $345.
ACS (I) informed parents of the hike by letter.
MGS has cited rising operation costs as the reason for the hike in school fees.
Said MGS president Shirleen Ong in the e-mail: "To continue to nurture the MGS girl in the fullest sense, the school must, inadvertently, take on the challenge of meeting the increasing cost of operation."
The last time MGS increased its school fees for Singapore citizens was in 2008.
No denying the needy
Mrs Ong also assured financially-strapped parents who may be worried about the increase in the e-mail.
"We do appreciate the impact the fee increase might have for some families, and would like to assure every member of the MGS community that no girl will be denied an MGS education because of genuine financial difficulty," she said.
Parents The New Paper spoke to said they were okay with the changes.
Parents, like freelancer Joyce Goh, 45, felt that the increase in school fees is justified. She did not even finish reading the e-mail to find out the reason behind the increase.
"We trust that the school will put the money to good use. Right now, the school is doing a good job," said MsGoh, whose daughter is in Secondary 2 there.
"My daughter does not need any tuition. I hope the school will help keep up the standard, or even raise it, now that the school fees are set to increase," she added.
Full-time volunteer Anita Fam, 49, said she saw the fee hike coming. Her daughter is now in Secondary 1.
"It's not unreasonable. With all the value-add in terms of courses, as well as the rising costs, I can understand (the rise in school fees)," said Ms Fam.
"It's not like they are constantly adjusting the school fees," she added.
Ms Fam is also part of the Grow-a-Seed Fund in MGS, which offers support to students in need.
The fund offers financial help to non-Singaporean students in MGS, who may not be covered by the financial assistance schemes offered by the Ministry of Education.
ACS (I) also has its own financial assistance schemes, one of which is the ACS (I) Pocket Money Fund, which helps to supplement students' lunch or recess money.
